A long-term energy partnership adapting to dairy industry needs
For over 20 years, E-Piim and Adven have worked together to ensure reliable energy solutions for dairy production. This collaboration began at E-Piim’s Põltsamaa factory, where Adven has been supplying energy for over 20 years. Now, with E-Piim’s expansion and the opening of a new, larger facility in Paide, one of the most modern dairy production plants in the Baltics, the partnership continues on an even larger scale.
To support the increased energy demands of the new factory, Adven has developed a high-capacity energy center in Paide. This facility ensures an efficient and long-term energy supply, reinforcing both companies’ commitment to sustainability and reliability in industrial operations.
The largest food industry energy solution in Estonia
The energy center, the largest of its kind in Estonia, produces up to 45 tons of steam per hour to support cheese and whey powder production. Built with flexibility in mind, it primarily runs on biomass, mainly wood chips, but can also utilize biogas, natural gas, liquefied gas, or light fuel oil when needed.
“Dairy processing, especially at E-Piim’s flagship factory in the Baltics, requires a reliable energy solution to ensure seamless production. This is our largest project in recent years, utilizing Adven’s finest engineering capabilities from both Estonia and the Nordic regioon,” says Raivo Melsas, Adven Eesti Country Head.
He adds that everything that is possible and reasonable is automated. Two maintenance technicians regularly visit the site, and continuous monitoring is carried out through Adven’s control room.
“Readiness to use different energy sources provides flexibility to ensure security of supply and reasonable prices. The goal is mainly to use renewable fuel – minimizing the environmental impact is a shared value for both Adven and E-Piim. It has been a pleasure to see during the project that both companies value a long-term perspective and partnership,” comments Raivo Melsas the successful collaboration.
Powering E-Piim’s production
E-Piim, one of Estonia’s largest producers and exporters of cheese, butter, and whey powder, has a long history in dairy production, with its first creamery established in Põltsamaa. With a strong focus on sustainability and responsible business practices, the company has continuously evolved to meet the growing demands of the dairy sector in the region.
Sustainability is key for E-Piim – from efficient processes to recycling materials. Adven’s renewable energy solution fits perfectly into our vision.”
Randel VeeritsPlant Director at E-Piim
Randel Veerits, Plant Director at E-Piim, highlights the importance of energy reliability: “The energy solution directly impacts the quality and stability of our production. We carefully selected our partner, and working with Adven’s team was smooth. We are confident in this collaboration.”
Construction of the energy center began in summer 2022. Adven designed and implemented the biomass pre-furnace, boilers, and other key systems, ensuring efficiency and reliability. Under a long-term agreement, Adven will operate and manage energy supply for the next 20 years.
