Secure operations, cut costs and drive sustainability with Adven’s water treatment solutions
Water management is becoming an increasingly critical issue in today’s rapidly changing world. As water availability is no longer guaranteed and industries face growing demands for sustainable practices, we at Adven are at the forefront of providing innovative water solutions across various sectors. In this article, we share insights from a recent in-depth discussion with Hampus Bellander, Head of Water Solutions at Adven, and Madeleine Vikström, Concept Engineer, on how we are shaping the future of water treatment together with our clients. Hampus Bellander and Madeleine Vikström are part of our specialized water treatment team, whose expertise spans a wide range of industries, including mining, waste incineration, and more. Our team’s knowledge of both inorganic and organic water treatments allows us to design custom solutions for diverse challenges—whether it’s flue gas condensation, nutrient reduction, heavy metal removal, or biogas production. According to Hampus, our team’s strength lies in its broad and deep expertise, enabling us to address the unique water treatment needs of each industry.
A reality check in the Nordics
As climate change and aging infrastructure increasingly disrupt water availability, industries must adapt. “We cannot rely on water the way we once did,” Hampus warns. In the Nordics, future water shortages, combined with quality fluctuations due to extreme weather, will challenge industries more than ever. We focus on building resilient water systems that can withstand these challenges while maintaining high sustainability.
Historically, water in the Nordics has been affordable, but increasing pressure on resources and infrastructure means costs could rise significantly in the near future. This presents a major challenge for industries that rely heavily on water. However, we believe that water treatment should not be viewed purely as an expense. When approached strategically, water treatment becomes an investment that enhances operational efficiency, reduces environmental impact, and secures the future availability of this vital resource.
Sustainability at the core of water treatment
At Adven, sustainability is at the heart of every water treatment solution. Our commitment goes beyond water reuse; we focus on nutrient recovery, ammonia reuse, and efficient treatment systems to help industries reduce their environmental impact. One example is our BPED (Biological Process for Energy and Desulfurization) technology, which recovers sulfur and sulfate from wastewater and transforms them into reusable chemicals for industrial production. This approach minimizes the need for new chemicals and supports industries in operating more sustainably.
Risk management: water as a safety net
Water shortages and quality issues can disrupt production processes, leading to costly shutdowns. “By reusing their own water, industries can reduce their reliance on external sources and mitigate risks associated with water quality fluctuations,” Hampus explains. Water reuse ensures production is not affected by sudden changes in availability, helping industries avoid costly disruptions. While the initial investment in water reuse systems may seem high, the long-term savings—both financially and environmentally—are substantial.
The future of water treatment: a collaborative effort
At Adven, we are committed to continuous improvement. With over 200 water treatment plants in operation, we offer ongoing support, monitoring, and optimization of our systems. Our extensive network of consultants and partners helps ensure our solutions are both innovative and practical. Our ability to apply established technologies, such as reverse osmosis and membrane filtration, in new ways enables us to create tailored solutions that meet the specific needs of each industry.
Energy as a Service®: a smarter investment
In addition to our water treatment solutions, our Energy as a Service® business model offers a unique approach to optimizing both water and energy usage. Through this model, we provide industries with long-term, cost-effective solutions that reduce their environmental impact while improving operational efficiency. By managing both energy and water systems together, we offer optimized solutions that include everything from energy recovery to waste heat repurposing.
While some companies may focus on short payback periods of 2-3 years, our model allows for investments with a slightly longer payback period of 3 to 6 years, resulting in greater long-term profitability. This approach ensures industries benefit from extended equipment lifespans, reduced operational costs, and lower energy consumption, making it a strategic and sustainable investment.
Summary
Our approach to water treatment combines technical expertise, innovation, and a strong commitment to sustainability. By focusing on reducing risks, reusing water, and optimizing industrial processes, we help industries navigate the challenges posed by a changing climate and evolving regulations. As water scarcity becomes an increasing concern, we are leading the way to ensure industries can continue to thrive while minimizing their environmental footprint.
We ensure that industries remain resilient and sustainable in a rapidly changing world.
