Level of hygiene in Suominen’s nonwovens is ensured by steam – prolonged agreement for Adven

Nonwovens manufactured by Suominen can be found in many products that require high hygiene, such as wet wipes, nappies, masks and hygiene products. Nonwoven fabric is dried by using steam and at the same time microbes are destroyed. Suominen and Adven have entered into an agreement extension for steam energy production.

Adven supplies steam energy as a service to Suominen’s Nakkila plant, in Western Finland. The companies have now entered into a long-term agreement extension. Partnership began in the early 2000s, when the plant’s carbon dioxide emissions were significantly reduced by doing cooperation in switching fuel oil to wood-based fuels, sourced from neighboring areas.

“We have a long cooperation and Adven was our number one option since we were satisfied with the operation. Reliability is by far the most important thing in energy supply. In the future, we will develop our processes together to be even more environmentally friendly and energy efficient,” says Piia Tiainen, Plant Manager at Suominen’s Nakkila plant.

The biosteam plant is 12 megawatts in size and includes several boilers. With the new agreement, Adven will make energy investments that are environmentally beneficial.

“The operation of the energy plant is being further developed. Investments in automation and combustion management will increase energy efficiency and security of supply as a whole,” says Jani Moisanen, Adven’s Account Manager.

More than 99% reliability of supply is required from energy – waste heat and by-products are also utilized

As Suominen produces nonwovens around the clock, energy production must also run 24/7. A possible supply break may affect less than 1% of all energy production. Reliability of supply is ensured by back-up boilers, and by-products are utilized in energy production.

“The waste heat from the factory can also be reused. Even today, the residual energy of our factory is utilized as district heating in Nakkila municipality, and the hope is to develop this cooperation in the future,” Tiainen says.
