Arctic Paper signs an agreement with Adven on sustainable energy supply for the paper mill in Munkedal, Sweden
The European paper producer Arctic Paper has concluded a long-term agreement with energy partner Adven on sustainable energy supply to the paper mill in Munkedal. The agreement reduces CO2-emissions significantly and ensures lower, more stable and predictable energy costs for Arctic Paper.
Arctic Paper is a leading producer of high-quality graphical paper in Europe. The site in Munkedal in south-west Sweden, one of the group’s three paper mills, currently use natural gas as energy source in their steam production. The new agreement means that Adven will build, own and operate a steam boiler plant with a capacity to deliver 30 MW.
”Energy prices are volatile and there is a significant political risk for the future. This agreement ensures Arctic Paper Munkedal’s long-term competitiveness through lower, more stable and predictable energy costs, it will also strongly reduce our environmental footprint”, says Michal Jarczyński, CEO of Arctic Paper S.A.
The new plant will mainly be operated on recycled wood and well-defined sorted and recycled materials. This means that Arctic Paper Munkedal can phase out the use of natural gas, which reduces the mill’s carbon dioxide emissions by 60 per cent and has a significant positive impact on energy cost.
“Our investments in sustainable energy infrastructure generates value to our customers and to the society. By applying proven technologies within energy production, we construct customer specific solutions that are both flexible and takes current market conditions into account. The collaboration with Arctic Paper in Munkedal will be the second larger project for Adven within the pulp and paper industry, after the project with Kotkamills in Finland, and we look forward to continuing to grow within this segment in Sweden” says Ilkka Niiranen, CEO of Adven Sweden.
The agreement was signed during March 2019 and the plant is expected to in operation in two years.
