Adven’s renewable energy production plant at Neste’s Naantali terminal has been commissioned
In 2022, Adven and Neste agreed on a new, service-based steam supply for Neste’s Naantali terminal in Finland. Now Adven’s energy plant produces steam to heat the materials stored at Neste’s terminal. Steam production is based on the optimized use of an electric boiler powered by renewable energy and a bio-steam boiler using domestic fuels.
With the help of about 60 different companies and nearly 200 experts in their field, Adven’s newest energy plant has been built in Naantali, next to the Neste terminal. The steam produced by the new energy plant will be used, among other things, to heat the materials stored at Neste’s terminal in order to maintain their quality at the required level.
With the new plant, Neste’s Naantali terminal has gained a flexible and cost-effective energy production with the help of two energy systems, that support each other. The new plant will also enable the utilization of condensate energy.
Scalable and cost-effective steam production according to customer needs
At the heart of the implementation of Neste’s Naantali energy plant is a 13-megawatt bio-steam boiler utilizing domestic wood chips and recycled wood and an electric boiler using 13 megawatts of renewable electricity. The use of these two mutually supporting heat sources is optimized according to which option is more efficient at any given time, both in terms of steam demand and cost.
“During the heating season, the plant will certainly be run more with a bio-boiler, when the need for heat is greater, and summers can be managed with electricity”, estimates Timo Maaskola, Project Manager at Adven.
“Optimization of energy production takes place with smart automation-based technology, the implementation of which is the work of Adven’s automation engineers”, he says.
The extensive project has been very successful from the perspective of both parties. Broad expertise and close local cooperation have been at the core of the work from the very beginning.
“The new energy plant will improve security of supply and flexibility that optimize the amount of steam needed. Our cooperation with Adven has been seamless. The availability of steam produced with renewable fuels and renewable energy supports Neste’s goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions from its operations and achieving carbon-neutral production by 2035”, says Heikki Tegelberg, Head of Terminal Operartions at Neste Oil Products business unit
Service-based collaboration model for stability and focus
The energy service at Neste’s Naantali terminal is based on Adven’s Energy as a Service cooperation model, in which Adven is responsible for the overall design, plant construction and related investments, as well as the operation and continuous development of the service during the long-term contract period. From the customers’ point of view, this means, among other things, stability in terms of risks and liabilities, as well as focusing on one’s own operations.
