Adven and Jujo Thermal Oy have agreed to continue their long-term collaboration in steam production in Eura, Finland. Through this agreement, Adven will continue to deliver steam from the Kauttua power plant for Jujo Thermal’s paper mill and strengthens industrial collaboration in the area. This partnership further enhances the reliable district heating production in the Eura region.

Jujo Thermal is one of the world’s leading suppliers of durable direct thermal papers for labels, tickets & tags and point-of-sales use. It is also a remarkable producer of the one-side coated self-adhesive label face stock and flexible packaging papers. Most products are exported, as Jujo Thermal, part of the Japanese Nippon Paper Group, is the only producer of thermal paper in the Nordic countries. Jujo Thermal’s paper mill in Kauttua employs approximately 200 people.

In paper production, uninterrupted and stable steam production is essential. Adven supplies the steam energy for Jujo Thermal as a service, taking full responsibility of the energy production from investments to daily maintenance and safe operation of the CHP plant. With the new agreement, the collaboration spanning over a decade will continue well into the future.

“Adven has been our long-term business partner. We are delighted with the service provided by Adven. It is always reliable and cooperative. I want to thank all the persons involved in the agreement, both parties. This will enable us to move to the future,” says Toshihiro Sawamura, CEO of Jujo Thermal Oy.

“The personnel at Adven have demonstrated commitment and professionalism in their daily work. Thanks to good cooperation, we have been able to achieve our goals and meet the needs of our customers. This creates a strong foundation for the future, where we aim for even more climate-friendly energy production in collaboration with Adven,” says Matti-Pekka Vanninen, Director of Management Systems at Jujo Thermal.

Modernization of the Kauttua power plant enhances reliability

The new steam production agreement ensures the continuation of combined heat and power production (CHP) at the Kauttua power plant. The facility generates steam energy for industry, heat for the Eura district heating network, and electricity for Finland’s national grid, with an annual energy output of over 200 gigawatt-hours.

The Kauttua power plant, in operation since the 1980s, was acquired by Adven in 2013. Followed by the signed new agreement with Jujo Thermal, Adven will undertake the modernization of the Kauttua power plant.

Scheduled for summer 2025, this modernization will involve upgrading the plant’s technology and systems, with the goal of reducing fossil fuel usage and replacing it with renewable energy sources. The plant utilizes a wide range of fuel types, that strengthen the reliability.

Leo Toivonen, Director of Sales Project Development at Adven, notes that by sourcing energy as a service, customers don’t need to commit their own capital or own personnel to the maintenance and development of energy production, including the planned power plant renewal.

“The agreement provides Jujo Thermal with predictable energy costs, and a secure, reliable supply of steam production for the long term. We are making significant investments in developing the power plant to ensure its reliable production continuity. The plant’s ability to use different fuels according to availability further enhances reliability and predictability,” says Toivonen.

“Jujo Thermal can focus on its core business and its development, while Adven ensures they will get the necessary amount of reliable steam for their processes. At the same time, local businesses and citizens benefit from district heating produced alongside steam production. Additionally, we contribute to Finland’s electricity production. The benefits of this partnership extend widely, and we are pleased that our cooperation with Jujo Thermal will help sustain the vitality of the Eura municipality well into the future,” adds Toivonen.
