The Northern European approach: A driving force behind the energy transition

For decades, Northern Europe has utilized a model to drive sustainability and accelerate the energy transition. This has been partly motivated by limited access to fossil fuels, unlike the natural gas abundance in the Netherlands. But the story doesn’t end there. The secret? An innovative approach known as “Energy as a Service”.

The energy transition presents significant challenges for industries, from chemicals to dairy. Companies are seeking ways to reduce CO₂ emissions, decrease reliance on fossil fuels, and manage costs. This requires not only technological solutions but also substantial investment and long-term commitment. As Victor Donselaar, Adven Netherlands’ Country Manager, states: “The low hanging fruits have already been picked. Now, we face more complex and capital-intensive challenges.”

With roots in Northern Europe, Adven is a pioneer in sustainable energy solutions. The company brings extensive experience to the Netherlands, which began its journey relatively late. Their focus lies in the industrial sustainability transition and replacing natural gas, a crucial step in meeting national and European climate targets.

Energy as a Service®

Adven’s success stems from its innovative Energy as a Service (EaaS) model. This approach allows businesses to focus on core activities while Adven manages their energy needs. As Donselaar explains, “A milk powder producer excels at making milk powder but not at sustainable energy processes – nor should they. We handle everything from design and construction to financing and operations.”

The model also addresses financial challenges. “We shoulder the full investment,” says Donselaar. “Companies then pay for the service, similar to an IT subscription. This makes complex sustainability projects more accessible, especially as payback periods lengthen.”

Real Impact

A prime example is Adven’s partnership with the chemical company Nobian in Delfzijl. Adven is constructing an electric evaporation plant powered by an industrial heat pump, saving Nobian up to 25,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually – equivalent to 198 million car kilometers. Adven manages the design, construction, investment, and operations. “Nobian’s willingness to outsource this makes them a leader. Companies are realizing that collaboration reduces risks and accelerates progress.”

Northern Europe vs The Netherlands

With 50 years of experience in Northern Europe, Adven thrives in cultures where sustainability and long-term thinking are embedded. “The difference with the Netherlands is clear,” Donselaar notes. “Here, we’re used to natural gas and quick solutions. In Scandinavia, sustainability is ingrained due to limited resources.”

Northern European businesses typically partner on sustainable energy projects, whereas Dutch firms traditionally invest independently – though this mindset is changing. Adven offers reliable partnerships rooted in Northern European values. “We’re not just suppliers,” Donselaar explains. “We remain involved for 15 years or more, ensuring solutions work and evolving with new innovations.”

The Road Ahead

The Dutch industry must reduce its reliance on natural gas while enhancing sustainability. With industrial clusters like the Port of Rotterdam and Brainport Eindhoven, the potential is vast. “The Dutch industry is six to seven times larger than Finland’s,” says Donselaar, “offering immense opportunities.”

Adven is establishing a strong presence in the Netherlands with an Arnhem-based team and a growing project portfolio. They support industries from chemicals to dairy, anticipating growth driven by new clients and existing partners expanding their Scandinavian successes. “In Northern Europe, our model is standard. The Netherlands is at a tipping point. Companies know the energy transition is inevitable and seek ways to overcome barriers. We’re here to help.”

By focusing on long-term strategies, technological innovation, and financial support, Adven positions itself as a key player in the Dutch energy transition, ready to support companies through action.
